CERTIFICATE IN COUNSELLING SKILLS

This Foundation Course provides 120 hours of training in the use of basic and advanced counselling skills. It offers students a solid grounding in skills for a range of helping and related professions in addition to forming the basis for entry into professional training.

Basic skills training includes active listening, non-verbal communication, questioning, and clarifying. The course also incorporates advanced skills such as focussing, empathy and immediacy. There is also a personal development component to the training as well as problem solving, counselling theory and ethics. The Course is assessed through a Learning Journal, self, peer and tutor assessment of counselling skills and two essays.

Successful students will receive a Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust Certificate in Counselling Skills. They may then proceed to the Inter-Psyche Diploma in Counselling.
Selection Criteria:

Selection for theCertificate is by application form and interview. Applicants will need to show evidence of:
  • maturity and stability (applicants should normally be at least 25 years of age);
  • an ability to make use of and reflect on life experience;
  • clear communication skills both verbal and written
  • a willingness to be flexible, self-critical and give & receive constructive feedback;
  • a commitment to respecting and celebrating difference.
