Certificate in Counselling Skills (BSL)

This course will be delivered entirely in BSL and has been developed by Inter-Psyche with the generous support of Signhealth, The British        Society for Mental Health and Deafness and the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

As the catchment area will cover the entire South of England, the course, which will follow broadly the same syllabus as the existing Certificate in Counselling, has been designed in the form of residential weekends. There will also be a system of distance tutorials and peer support.

In addition to input on basic and advanced counselling skills and the foundations of counselling theory, this course offers considerable opportunities for personal development and the acquisition of study skills. Specific issues relating to counselling in the Deaf Community will also form part of the syllabus.

Successful students will receive the Kent & Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust Certificate in Counselling Skills. They will then be eligible to proceed to the Diploma in Counselling (BSL) course.

Selection Criteria for the course are:
  • Maturity and stability
  • An ability to reflect on and make sense of life experience
  • Clear communication (BSL level 2)
  • A willingness to be flexible and to give and receive constructive feedback
  • A commitment to respecting and celebrating difference
